Sometimes, against a uniform, bright background such as a clear sky or a blank computer screen, you might see things floating across your field of vision. What are these moving objects, and how are you seeing them? Michael Mauser explains the visual phenomenon that is floaters.

+Ananta Sesa das makes a lot of sense :) thanks

Hi TED-ED, after watching this, a question has come up in my mind. Can it be possible to say, if because of the presence of floaters and the shadows they cast on the retina, can they have effect on one"s photography with respect to exposure of light?

When I"m trying to go to sleep, aka, when my room is dark and I"m not focusing on a light source, I see kind of like a bright flashing light sequence. It"s really annoying and I can"t blink it away. It only goes away when I focus on an actual object rather than staring into darkness.Any ideas?

sounds like retinal detachment to me...not too sure my dad"s an eye doctor tho.

 +Creo -Tan Me too

finally, my childhood puzzling question has been answered

+Vincent Labrecque same to, funny isnt

There"s another thing I"m experiencing with my eyes. If I close my eyes really tight I could see some orange/green/red sparkles. I wonder what kind of phenomenon is that...

The exact same thing happens to me.

The retina in the backs of your eyes is also pressure sensitive in addition to detecting light. You can also experience this if you close your eyes, look as far to your left as you can, then gently move your finger around on the far right corner of your right eye (towards your ear). A dot will appear towards your nose that moves as you move your finger, except the movement is mirrored.

I always wondered about these things.that and the static we can sometimes see

when i was little i just assumed i had a super power where i can see tiny bacteria or cells, looks like i was half right

also i once saw the moving lights and i was looking at my arm and for a second i freaked out because i thought there were tiny insects crawling all over my hands

Eu estava realmente com medo de ter alguma coisa viva dentro dos olhos.I was really afraid I had something alive in my eyes.

Parece que são é larvas de moscas, Credo!

E eu pensava que enxergava vermes fantasmas!  :D

Thanks, I had wondered about this since childhood!https://youtu.be/Y6e_m9iq-4Q

Cool.  I already knew about floaters, but I didn"t know about "Sky Sprites".  Totally worth watching if you"re a #Science geek like me :)

And here I was thinking it was Cosmic Rays. Nice to be able to dispel that myth. I thought I might have been special or something lol.

wait wait wait wait! you mean to tell me that a single red blood cell is big enough to cast a shadow? that goes for "clumps of protein" too? Last time i checked, proteins are smaller than DNA strands, yet i can SEE them?! Whoa!! What resolution is the human eye then?

Actually, the red cells swell up due to osmotic pressure and what you see are the diffraction rings on the retina.  Clump enough protein together (cook an egg) and you can see it.  Actually, "clumps of protein" was intentially pretty vague, it got me out of going into detail on what it is exactly.  See the "Dig Deeper" section for more information.

Crap. And here I thought I was the only one that was able to travel to other worlds when I pushed my hands up against my eyes.#themoreyouknow

Here"s proof of intelligent design you atheists!!!

 Classic

 :D

If you stare at the ceiling and see millions of dots moving around what is that? It looks like its all moving sideways or something with the wind. WHAT IS THAT? IVE ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW?!?!

I have it all the time, it"s like trying to watch Fox Channel 64 on analog TV in Rhode Island, like a UHF TV channel that"s not coming in very good. At night it"s quite snowy. On another note I have never heard silence except in my dreams.

Yes, this is much worse than floaters.

That was really cool but i have another question, what are those little things I see when my eyes are closed or when I"m lying in bed at night? There"s nothing to cause a shadow- are these things different? They can actually make it hard to sleep sometimes they"re so visible. They look kind of like fireworks or a light show...

 Thanks +Syntaxus Dogmata

What you are seeing is energy floating around in your room, If you see them clear you have a good Ajna Chakra.

I was able to decrease the amount of floaters I see by taking food grade diatomaceous earth.

Yes, it can help with hair and nails. But it"s not a jelly. It"s a fine powder.

d earth kills parasites and metal so maybe these floaters are parasite or metals

Na tohle video jsem čekal asi deset let.

 Skvělé! Moc díky!

Zase jsem o něco chtřejší :-)

Referência educativa...------See this ref with "other eyes"...=]

nooossaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

In 1977 an eye specialist told me " They are called Floaters, there is no cure or treatment, they could be there for up to a year"  you do the maths but I still have them.

I haven"t seen floaters in years. Not since I was little. After watching this video I can see them again. They"re everywhere.

And I always tought they were bacteria like those in our intestines..

 Me 2 !!

I"ve seen both, the second appears to be all colours of the spectrum for me sometimes, is that normal ?

This is the first time I have heard of seeing colors with the blue field entoptic phenomenon.  The only ideas I have are that you may be seeing a delayed response with the three different color receptors in the retina similar to the effect with a Bentham Disk.  This is described in the Michael Bach web site on optical illusions.  Otherwise, it might be you are seeing something entirely different, such as the diffraction of light due to the structure of the lens which can result in some very nice radiating lines with the colors of the spectrum.  Take a look at my video See Inside Your Eye Part 2 Using a Blue Light Field to See White Blood Cells ... which goes into more detail on how to get good views of the blue field entoptic phenomenon.

Oh my god, those white things at the end. I do see those from time to time. I"ve always referred to them as "fireflies". They always seem to appear when I raise my head quickly.

+jotomicron i once read its a symptom of a so called "silent migraine" cause i saw them even behind closed eyes... i now wonder what it was.

I read up on it once a while back... it"s actually similar to when your leg falls alseep and then wakes up and you experience pins and needles, except it"s the nerves / blood vessels in the your neck getting pinched and then released instead of your nerves in your leg. Since it"s on a smaller scale, you don"t get the pins and needles feeling, but you see it manifest itself in the form of what the video said. That could be totally wrong since it"s been a while since I researched it, (and I"m too lazy to look it up again)... but that"s how I understand it to be. I"ll look more into it later, "cause I get it too. XD

What about when you close your eye, push on your eyelid for an extended amount of time, and begin to see a halo that grows and develops black and blue checkerboard patterns?

Some 15 years ago, as a kid, I punctured my left eye with a knife. Because of the eye-closing reflex I didn"t hit the pupil and the knife didn"t go deep enough to damage anything else, so doctors just stithced the 1 or 2 cm gash and the eye healed perfectly, I have no discernible eyesight loss apart from the fact that there is a big floater inside my eye, like a knotted clump of a few hairs. Just like normal floaters, I normally ignore it completely.

That"s a great video, great lesson.  Thanks.  I didn"t know any of this.

Nancy? I can"t believe you love Ted Ed! I love your channel! :D

Sometimes used notice the same mark in the same place of my field of vision quite often around 2 months ago but I don"t really see it now, at first I thought is was one of them but I could tell it wasn"t so what was it? Is it a scratch on my eye?

Have you ever noticed something swimming in your field of vision? While these may look like worms, they"re called floaters. Learn more via +TED-Ed. - Jason

Glad to hear you connected with your doctor, +Navdeep Singh. - Jason

We can"t diagnose or treat conditions over social media, +Navdeep Singh. Floaters are normal, but if you"re concerned, you should check with your doctor. - Jason

Our biology and mind affect what we see. Here"s an explanation of those weird things that you may have seen in your eyes before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=190&v=Y6e_m9iq-4Q

weird, ive never seen floaters in my life.

+rey2bestIts when you overexpose your eyes to light, the light sensitive cells will trigger more sensitively.

maybe it"s an age and mind  thing :)

Eyeball Floaters ExplainedThis 4-minute TED-Ed video explains Muscae Volitantes - Latin for "Flying Flies". They are the sometimes annoying  ghostly lines many notice floating in their field of vision, especially while staring at uniform colored backgrounds. Not to worry - they aren"t ON your eye - they are IN your eye ...

 Huge thanks for educating me

Hah .. these guys have been with me since childhood. Finally an answer !Science rocks :D

Blue Field Entoptic Phenomenon Is actually you seeing energy, this video is just a misinformative version of what you"re really seeing, in favor of mainstream science. You don"t have to agree with me, you don"t have to believe a word I say.

Sounds to me like mass hypnosis. Either they were altogether coming into or out of one (or even more than one). So what they saw either existed and was hidden before or didn"t exist and was finally resolved in their minds as just a hallucination being projected from the past or a distance. The question you seem to want to know is how they were all able to see those same things that had previously not been seen (or noticed) well I don"t know for sure but to give my best explanation I"d compare it to the fine tuning on an old tv. Like focusing a lens you can see finer details more clearly or by unfocusing it you blur the details. And if an expert narration directed their attention to those details it didn"t make them come into existence. It just calmed their minds enough so that they could see them. Or aggravated their minds enough so that they couldn"t see them anymore, just like what psychiatric drugs or sports pep talks do so people can cope without feeling obliged to respond to so much that they would notice and feel bombarded with otherwise.

+van ivan To reiterate my earlier comment, 1) if you are not looking into a difuse light source with a blue light component, 2) if the movement is not in time with your pulse, 3) if the dots of light don"t retrace their paths, and 4) if you can see it in the very center of your vision, what you are seeing in most likely NOT the blue field entoptic phenomenon.  It could be random noise (Prisoner"s cinema) or any of a number of other things.  Please refer to the "Dig Deeper" section in TED-Ed for this video for more information.

On a clear day if I do a handstand for 3-8 seconds and then stand up I see those "stars" flying around in my eyes. It Makes sense because they follow your pulse. So after something physical like a handstand they go crazy!

Technical explanation behind "eye floaters" and "blue sprites" http://youtu.be/Y6e_m9iq-4Q

No they are mushishi that lives in your eyes.

Wow 2 of the 3 eye things i have wondered what they are! Now when i figure out why i see light from a street light at night as dots that convex on one side and concave move on the other i can stop thinking I"m crazy

+Jeff Tompas I really can"t say much more than I already said without you answering my previous specific questions. Here are some more questions: Is the street light in focus? Do you see the same thing with each eye as you close them alternately?

Yeah i can see the rest just fine. Same with either eye. Does change depending on which side I"m on

2 things that I miss from this.  1, ok floaters are bits inside your eye, wow I never knew that, but: is it possible to get floater-like animals/debris on the eye lens from eg swimming in a lake?  B, What about the fireflys that come with a headrush or blow to the head?  Are they the same as described here, and why are they so much more prevalent with a headrush?

 1. Debris on the eye surface cannot be seen normally, however, you can see particles on the surface if you hold a point light source close to your eye.  See the video "See inside your eye, Part 1: Using a point source of light to see floaters and cataracts".  This video describes easy ways to see things on and inside your eye very clearly by projecting their shadows on the retina.B. Maybe.  The white blood cells are more visible when you exert yourself, I"m not sure why, maybe because of more flow or higher pressure?

But how does the detritus get into the vitreous humour in the first place? And I see the sky sprites sometimes during orthostatic hypotension I think.

They are debris from your development in the womb.

The fetal eye has a channel to the lens which falls apart and as we age, the vitreous humor changes to produce floaters.  Red blood cells escape from the capillaries into the vitreous humor and swell up due to osmotic pressure and can link together. Except for parasites (very rare), nothing from outside gets into your eye.

I finally stumbled upon a natural way to cure (or drastically reduce) eye floaters - without the need of any expensive and harmful surgical procedures or products.

 find it here ==> http://eyoutube.info/stopeyefloater

Instead of arguing about which sexual practices your chosen sky god approves or disapproves of in the bedroom of two consenting adults why don"t we all just look at this interesting and educational video and learn something.

Neat! Always wondered what these were caused by. #Eyes #Floaters #themoreyouknow

I always see like tiny balls of light that are kind of like sand swimming around in a kind of wave in different directions. Anybody else know what I"m trying to describe?

ok nevermind, watched the whole video.

It"s still cool, I"m not the only one. Sometimes when I"m dehydrated pr stand up to quickly, stare at light or the sky this happens. The human body is crazy.

And i thought aliens were trying to contact me. I even wrote my email id on my forehead. Damn

You must also own a pair of glasses!!!

Michael, I have always enjoyed your videos, as the shed light on problems that most eye doctors don"t even seem to know. I"ve had floaters like this, as well as Blue Field Entoptic Phenomenon for around 5 years now. It is constant. Can you shed any light on these symptoms being caused by anxiety? After seeing so many doctors over the years, my RX has basically been "overexciteability" or "hypersenitivity". Since I have accepted this fact for over a year now, my outlook on these symptoms have improved, as well as my fear of these frightening symptoms...However, these problems still do persist, and I feel I will never enjoy a walk outside like I did for 27 years of my life before all these strange things started happening to my vision. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I"m not a physician and since my focus is on things that are "normal", I don"t really know a lot about problems people have.  About all I can say is that we do learn to ignore a great deal (background noise, smells, etc.) and at times we can become acutely aware of them, such as our heartbeat, when we are anxious.  I have read some books by Temple Grandin.  She describes her ordeals with autism; it seems to me that autistic people have a harder time ignoring sensory inputs, but she developed ways to deal with this.  Also, I have heard some good things about "mindfulness" techniques (see http://palousemindfulness.com/) with regard to dealing with long term stress.

+Michael MauserThe autism reference makes me think of the difference between pixelated images and smooth forms. There are no perfectly smooth physical forms. They exist in our minds as a concept and that principle is what we need to use to filter out sensory inputs like the grid of a screen"s pixels or our retina"s resolution limit with veins and imperfection to see only macro or micro but not both simultaneously or the molecular crystalline structure seen in microscopes.

What do you call these things when you rub your eyes and when tou open them a bunch of colors come out like you"re high

Wow. Awesome. I"ve always wondered what they where! Thanks TED!

I have to say one little thing that needs a clarification.Under high dosage of cannabis, i was able to illuminate my retina at will in total darkness. This looked like incredibly small dots of light, often green, blue, or white when they"re all shining at the same time. I wonder if there is any other experience that could relate to that.

 +TheVintageRomance ayyy lmao

Was wondering and got it now..

 O.o

 So well explained!!

 Blue Field Entopic Phenomenon!!

I was worried a lot about these when I was a kid. I remember thinking that I have a special sickness or something. :D

 Moscas volantes nos olhos

I never new the causes of this.....I get both of them.  Cool!

 no...it"s mushi. shi.

Unfortunately, there are not enough scientific arguments for this explanation. All there is in this video can are suppositions, or at best hypothesis. No proof. But seductive because of its simplicity.

Proofs are found in mathematics, not science. The intent of this video was to present the best explanation available to us at this time for floaters and the blue field entoptic phenomenon.  If you want more information on the observations  and scientific arguments that were made in the last couple hundred years which have led scientists to accept the conclusions presented in this video, please see the TED-Ed Dig Deeper information.  If you have any alternate explanations, please post them.

No wrong aging its energy every time when i finish meditation i see alot of it.

I thought the Blue Field Entoptic Phenomenon was something else. Can anyone else see very small red dots travel horizontally across their eyes anytime they want, also on blue or white or bright backgrounds? If so, what is that if not Blue Field..?

 Mystery solved!

 Finally...

Thank you so so so much for explaining this. I have been puzzled by these phenomena since childhood.

People should not be screwing around with their eyes in the first place, you goofs.

 :-{P}

Okay, this one I have already figured out! Tell me about the littles shinnys dots that show up moving faster and when we try to focus these things look like they are close to us, ( you cant focalize one, you can focalize where all these things moves) but once you focalize it, when you look again far away, they "goes" together! And sometimes just "pop up" some shiny dot outside our focus center! The closest idea about it was "prana" the energy that move the word, but I would like to see a more scientific explanation.. I thought about the natural process of the cells... But I really don"t know... You can see this more easily looking at the blue sky, preferably at dawn or twilight.

See my videos "See inside your eye, Part 1: Using a point light source to see floaters and cataracts" and "See inside your eye, Part 2: Using a blue light field to see white blood cells moving on your retina"  They describe techniques for getting very clear views of these things so you can decide better what you might be seeing.

Oh thank god... I thought I had AIDS.

 This is disgusting!

There"s also the one where you see a branch of veins when you suddenly look at something bright at night. I"m guessing those are the capillaries.

You are seeing the larger blood vessels, not the capillaries.  See my video "See inside your eye Part 3: Using a moving light to see shadows of blood vessels on your retina" for techniques on how to get good views of this.  If you want to see shadows of the capillaries I show how to do this in my video "See inside your eye, Part 2: Using a blue light field to see white blood cells moving on your retina"

hey ,if anyone else trying to find out treatment floaters try Megarno Clear Eyes Magician (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my friend got amazing success with it.

Thnx for the information - I"ve never been afraid for this but you wonder what it is ^_^

 Ahora todo tiene sentido o_O

When I do backstrokes while swimming, I usually get droplets of water on my goggles and the ceiling lamps shine though them. When I squint my eyelashes are magnified to the point where they look like huge tubes in my field of vision, but I also see purple, large-intestine like tube squelching about. Is this a floater? It"s very defined when I look at it and its always in the same spot (every time I swim I see it in the same location). Thanks!

Probably.  A point light source close to the eye will cast shadows on your retina of things on your cornea, in your lens, and within your eye, so you can see the tear film on your eye, cataracts in your lens, and all the floaters in your eye.  The droplets on the googles act as convex lenses making a small virtual image of the overhead lights close to your eye - essentially a point light source.  For more information see my video "See inside your eye, Part 1: Using a point light source to see floaters and cataracts" for more information.

+Michael Mauser Thank you so much for replying! I will watch your video for sure.

 http://youtu.be/Y6e_m9iq-4Q

Ever wonder what those floaty little black things in your #eyes are? Here"s a good #TED talk on them:

 thank god this isn"t alive

 3:23 gave me a chuckle.

Nice explanation.. "Just keep eating gmo food and inhaling Chem trails.. Don"t worry about the bugs living in your eyes." People who buy what the woman in this video is saying are clearly sheep, clearly incapable of distinguishing reality from the fiction preached by so called scientists who were bought and paid for by the nWo.

 lol wat?

+Dane Curbow just trolling.. Guess it was too obvious though :/

 Importantísimo

  Genial!! Explicado muy a sencillamente!

But why do they have little cartoon eyes?

Yeah, it is a bit silly, but it is after all a cartoon, not an accurate drawing of floaters.  If it was accurate, we would show the red blood cell swollen up due to osmotic pressure.  Besides, everyone"s floaters are different, maybe someone out there sees eyes in their floaters.

 飛蚊症的原因

well, fed ed, quiet amusing try........all of a sudden the whole freakin world got "normal floaters" in their eyes, never existed before in any of my generations - how about naming it Morgellons or nano-infection from the totally destroyed chemical atmosphere we breathe inside our bodies every single minute........just a suggestion..........

+Bindu Sajanwell, u obviously lack 99% of the info u need to even type a word - happy new years ;)

También, se puede ver el video "See inside your eye, Part 1: Using a point light source to see floaters and cataracts".  Este video tiene subtítulos en español.

+Michael Mauser youtube trae la opcion de subtitulado, el cuadrito que esta al lado de la tuerca para cambiar la resolucion.

Check out this video on YouTube:

When i focus on them in a clear blue sky i basically see Tiny cells floating around.I blame the screens.

with the Blue Field Entoptic Phenomenon, i don"t get it when looking at a blue sky, i get it after getting up too quickly due to what i assume is low blood pressure. so this still somewhat explains that, thanks :)

Wouldn"t the vitreous detaching also cause increase in floaters?

 Yes.

+Michael Mauser Is the vitreous detachment a serious issue?

 Cells are living things

Cells can be dead and still be called cells.

 ...sure are, +Sarah Rosen !

..but I have seen peeps that have one large floater in the almost center of their retina... which will block light....the effects of getting rid of them are tremendous.

I also get a vortex wormhole kind of distortion when looking at bright blank spaces. It"s very subtle and easy to ignore, but if I focus on it the vortex-y thing will fill my whole vision. I wonder what that is.

I thought I was the only one too o/\\o

Interesting.Bet I"m not the only one that finds these floaters a nuisance.
